After a relatively warmer New Year's Day, the biting winter cold returned on Thursday morning, with the minimum temperature recorded at 4°C, three degrees below normal. Strong winds of up to 19 kilometres per hour added to Delhiites' misery.

Fog enveloped several parts of the city well into the wee morning hours.

The chilly weather is expected to continue for a few more days. The maximum temperature on Thursday will hover around 18°C.

Cold waves swept Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh with minimum temperatures hovering several notches below normal even as fog reduced visibility this morning at some places.

Freezing cold swept Amritsar, which recorded a below normal low of 0.8°C.

Ludhiana and Patiala, too, experienced the chill recording respective lows of 5.8°C and 5.6°C , the MeT office said.
