Urvanshi Dhanurkar (32) was, however, granted bail on Saturday on a bond of Rs 10,000 by a local court.

Dhanurkar, a resident of the upmarket New Link road in suburban Andheri, has denied the allegations claiming the girl — Rameshwari Jadhav — has psychological problems.

“I haven’t beaten her, but I’ve become the victim of her circumstances,” she said.

On Friday, Dhanurkar, allegedly burnt the Jadhav’s hands and other parts of her body with a heated spoon for eating her food without permission.

Amboli police station’s Senior Police Inspector Kailash Ghamande said Dhanurkar’s neighbour learned about the incident and told the police, who sent her to Cooper hospital in Juhu, for medical examination.

“Dhanurkar, a mother of two minor children, was questioned and arrested,” Ghamande said.

Jadhav told the police she cried for help and begged Dhanurkar to stop beating her, but Dhanurkar did not relent. She also alleged that Dhanurkar had punched her near her eyes about a fortnight ago.

Police said a relative of Dhanurkar’s had brought Jadhav to Mumbai after Dhanurkar had requested someone as caretaker for her children.

Jadhav has been sent to the Children’s Home in Dongri in south-central Mumbai.
