Woman killed in stampede in Gujrat

An 68-year-old woman was killed and ten others injured in a stampede at an annual function in the Arabic University in Surat.

An 68-year-old woman was killed and ten others injured in a stampede at an annual function in the Arabic University in Surat, police said on Monday.

The incident took place late on Sunday night in Zampa Bazar area where the convocation cermony was on, they said.

According to the police, a large number of people from Bhora community had gathered on the occassion to get a glimpse of their religious leader Sayeedna Mohamad Burhannydin, who was the chief guest for the function.

This led to a stampede as the venue lacked the capacity to accomodate a big crowd, they said.

Rabba Shiakani, hailing from Jamnagar was injured in the stampede with ten others, police said.

The woman later succumbed to her injuries at the Bhurhani hospital where she was rushed for treatment, they said adding the injured have also been admitted to the same hospital.

The woman's body has been sent to civil hospital for postmortem, police said.

A case has been registered and further investigations were on, police added.
