Gone are the days when women were considered emotionally and physically fragile. February 19 would witness them handling rifles and taking aim in the Bhopal Open Rifle Shooting Competition to be organised by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) at the shooting range of 25th SAF Battalion, Bhadbhada Road.
Enthusiasm among women for the championships could be gauged from the fact that over 20 females have registered their names for the competition. According to Shadab Khan of the organising committee, of the 90 entries received, 20 are from women. “We are expecting 30 women contestants in the competition”, said Shadab.
Though most of the women participants are not professionals, their shooting can still enthrall any one. “Being a woman, it is always tough for us to give time for shooting practice. But a keen interest in shooting always attracts me to participate in such competitions” said Archana Kekre.
She has been participating in shooting contests for the last three years and won good positions. A teacher by profession, Kekre felt that rifle shooting is game that helps women in their security too. “After firing a bullet, confidence automatically enhances”, she said.
Craze for rifle shooting could be gauged from the fact there are participants like Sunila Sharma Raja who is above 40 years and still keen to contest with any other participant. Social worker Sunila said that she joined rifle shooting, as it is adventurous. “The adventure of rifle shooting attracts me to participants in shooting competition.
Moreover, security is the other reason”, said the confident Sunila. Shooters like Divyaka Tripathi will also participate in the event. She is the major contender of the competition. Winner of gold medallist in the past shooting events, she
is all set to put challenge to other contestants.
Seema is another participant who is keen to contest in the competition. Winner of silver and bronze medals in other shooting competition, Seema said that such events give an opportunity to women to demonstrate their talent. “A number of women are coming which shows that shooting is getting popular”, she added. Various schoolgirls brought laurels to the City by winning at the State and national level.
