Former Union Minister Yadav said that the Union Government and state governments should stop working on the SEZs, adding that such zones would spell doom to the nation’s agriculture sector. “We want the UPA government to scrap SEZs immediately” he told a press conference here.

Though he said that the Congress was a divided house over the SEZs, it was pushing forward this plan amid confusion. He said that even Congress president Sonia Gandhi raised her objections to the SEZs at the party’s Nainital conclave.
Yadav said the zones were proposed to come up on major agricultural land, which would prove detrimental to the interest of the farmers who would be rendered jobless.

Asked that why the JD (U) was opposing the SEZs so late when the UPA government has already okayed over 250 SEZs, he said that the opposition to the zones was going on for a long time.

About his differences with former Union minister George Fernandes, he said that they have buried their hatchet.
