IN WHAT can be called a major victory for India as far as hosting events of an extravagant nature is concerned, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have won the bid to host the cricket World Cup 2011.

Announcing the decision on Sunday, the ICC also said the 2015 World Cup would go to Australia and New Zealand, and the 2019 event to England.

I.S. Bindra, who represented Asia, said the theme of the presentation was "Cricket First". "We simply explained that in this part of the world, cricket is a religion and everything come after that," he said. "We went on to explain how all other functions -- like marriages, Bollywood movies and other official functions -- are sacrificed for the sake of
cricket."

But he refused to take credit for the victory. "No doubt I made the presentation and no doubt the Pakistan Cricket Board's president applauded my presentation in front of the mediapersons, but I would say it was a joint effort made by all the cricket boards."

Bindra said the commercial aspect had been dealt with adequately. "All the respective boards in the subcontinent will earn enough from the event," he said.

ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed gave some details of the schedule. India will host 22 matches, Pakistan 14, Sri Lanka nine and Bangladesh six. The matches will be held at eight venues in India, four in Pakistan, two in Sri Lanka and one in Bangladesh.

A decision on where the final will be held is yet to be made. Speaking about the factors which made the ICC go in favour of the Indian subcontinent, Speed said, "There were many but the important once were: when the bids were made, administration, government facilities. Commercial considerations also came into the picture."
