Malik was released in Jammu and was being flown to Srinagar, JKLF spokesman Mohammad Ashraf said.

Earlier, a private television channel reported that Malik was one of a number of separatist leaders ordered released by newly-elected Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.

Sayeed was sworn into office on November 2 as head of a coalition in the state comprising his regional People's Democratic Party and the Congress party.

The new Chief Minister had promised that he would pave the way for peace by holding unconditional talks with separatists and with terrorist leaders and scrapping of controversial law POTA.
