Since the victim Yaqoob was nephew of BSP leader Gayasuddin and a backlash was feared, PAC personnel were deployed in the locality to avoid any untoward incident. Officials from the police and district administration too were present at the spot.

The fear was not without reason. Gayasuddin’s son Tariq on hearing the news rushed to the place and created a ruckus at the Para outpost later.

The incident took place around 5.45 pm when neighbours heard sounds of gunshots from Santosh Singh’s house at Para locality. As the residents came out of their houses, they spotted Santosh and his brother-in-law Ajay leaving the place on a motorcycle.

The local residents entered the house to find a youth’s body lying on the floor. They immediately called up the control room and the policemen at nearby Para outpost.

The deceased was identified as Yaqoob Hashmi (26) of New Para Colony Raza Nagar, Rajajipuram. Yaqoob’s uncle Gayasuddin had contested assembly elections twice from different constituencies in Lucknow and once from Unnao as a BSP candidate.

Local residents also informed the police that they had seen Santosh heading towards his house on his motorcycle. Yaqoob was driving the mobike and Santosh was sitting as pillion around 4.50 pm.

The cops said they could comment on the incident only after the assailant or any of his family members were caught.

Those close to the victim revealed that Yaqoob was a close friend of Santosh Singh and the duo used to stay together. Santosh, who was involved in various criminal activities including shady land deals, had earlier been jailed in a murder case under Ghazipur police station.

According those who knew the duo, Yaqoob and Santosh had got 18 bighas of land at Kulharkata village near Para locality sold off about four months back,. Though Santosh owned the land, he was unable to sell the property as the same plot was sold to several persons at different times fraudulently.

However, Yaqoob had managed the deal with an assurance from Santosh that the money would be divided between the two. Yaqoob reportedly had received cut money of about Rs 5 lakh against the deal. But Yaqoob did not share that with Santosh.

On Tuesday, Santosh along with his wife’s brother Ajay and another youth Chhotu went to Dhania Mehri pul crossing in the noon where Yaqoob was sitting at the Rajajipuram-Mohan bus stand, which he ran on contract. Santosh took Yaqoob to his home where he and Ajay shot him following a verbal dual over the dispute.
