Barwani district collector Tejaswi Naik on Saturday set an example by picking up empty food packets from the ground at a farmers’ summit in the city and putting them in a dustbin.
Earlier, local MP Subhash Patel inaugurated the three-day Kisan Mela at the Krishi Upaj Mandi Parisar, where thousands of farmers watched the speech given by chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Ujjain via through two large projector screens.
During the function, 26,126 farmers were handed over the payment certificate of a cumulative Rs 7.84 crore for their claims under the national insurance scheme.
Later, the farmers were served food packets prepared by the district administration. After eating, the farmers threw the empty packets on the ground, leading to Naik picking up the waste.
Ashamed by the collector’s act, all the officers and public representatives present also pitched in and within 25 minutes, the ground was clear of waste.
“It was my programme, hence I was responsible for each thing which goes wrong. Instead of scolding the officials, I wanted to get the message was loud and clear,” Naik said.
