On Monday, Govindgarh police raided the house of Shakil Qureshi at Badbada Modh in Govindgarh town and arrested three women on the charges of slaughtering a cow at home, the police said. They recovered 40kg of beef from their possession. Shakil was arrested on Tuesday. The three women are his wife, mother and sister-in-law.

Shakil told the police about Saleem, who runs a licenced abattoir at Govindgarh in partnership with Sattar of Bharatpur. They also supplied cowhides to Hapur in Uttar Pradesh, Shakil told the police.

Saleem and Sattar are missing after Shakil’s arrest, Govindgarh SHO Dara Singh said.

Police recovered 350 hides from the warehouses on Wednesday. Veterinary doctor Jitendra Singh confirmed that 220 of them were cowhides. Later, the hides were disposed of at a ground in the old fort area.

“During the investigation, we found out that Saleem held a licence for selling the skin of dead animals but he got into slaughter and sale of beef,” the SHO added.

Meanwhile, the police said Shakil had admitted to selling beef in nearby localities on a motorcycle. “He told us that in the past, he had killed four cows in the forest area of Bulaheri Jhareda village,” the SHO said.

Meanwhile, BJP MLA from Ramgarh, Ahuja, on Wednesday reached Shakil’s house with his supporters and conducted the purification ritual. Addressing reporters, he said that those arrested for cow slaughter should be given the death sentence. He also demanded the arrest of those people who bought beef from Shakil.
