Alleging that the state government has adopted double standards in the Delta Meghwal rape and murder case, city’s Dalit community leaders on Tuesday threatened a massive protest against the government at district headquarters on Wednesday. Saying that they have lost faith in state agencies, they demanded a CBI probe into the case.
Delta Meghwal, a 17-year-old Dalit girl, was allegedly raped by a teacher at an institute in Bikaner’s Nokha town and her body in a water tank on March 29 this year.
Convener of the Dalit Atyachar Nivaran Samiti (DANS) Udaram Meghwal said that after the nationwide protest on April 20 chief minister Vasundhara Raje had assured the victim’s father that the government had handed over the case to the CBI. Udaram added that till date the CBI has not started probe into the matter, saying that if probe starts on time the accused would not be able to get bail.
The state government had earlier claimed that Delta Meghwal had committed suicide while the deceased’s family members and the opposition Congress party in the state alleged that she was raped and murdered and demanded a CBI probe into the matter.
The DANS convener also alleged that the Dalit community has already lost faith in the state agencies and now they are feeling betrayed by the government. Now the community has decided to protest against the state government on June 15, Udaram said Dalit community members nearby Jaisalmer and Jalore districts will also participate in the protest.
The Congress also had widely protested against the state government in this rape and murder case. Soon after the incident, on April 7 Congress state chief Sachin Pilot and leader of Opposition Rameshwar Dudi reached the victim’s village Tirmohi village in Barmer to met her family members.
Later on April 13, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi also met the victim’s family at Tirmohi village and demanded a CBI probe into the matter while alleging that this case has also been suppressed like Hyderabad scholar Rohit Vemula’s case.
