Five people were killed and two critically injured when they got down from the wrong side of a passenger train and were run over by an express train at Sawai Madhopur railway station on Sunday.

Those killed were passengers of the Jaipur-Bayana Express, which halted at platform number one. The train was overcrowded and instead of getting down on the platform some passengers got down on the railway tracks on the other side. The Garbha Express which was passing at a high speed crushed the victims.

Station house officer of railway police force Devendra Kumar said that the bodies have been sent to a mortuary for post-mortem and the injured have been rushed to the district government hospital.

The train was overcrowded as people were coming back home to celebrate Raksha Bandhan on Monday. All the deceased and the injured were coming from Jaipur for the festival.

Man Singh (30) from Madhya Pradesh, Ravi Jatav (25) from Sawai Madhopur, Kamal Meena (19), Mukesh Jatav (14) and Mukesh Veshnav (35) from Karauli were identified as dead. Rajesh Kumar (25)— a resident of Karauli — was identified as one among the two injured.

Sawai Madhopur district collector Kailash Chand Verma said that the deceased have been identified with the help of their mobile phones and identity cards.

Compensation from the railway department and district administration will be issued to the victim families, Verma said.
