The Congress on Saturday blamed the BJP government for “pitiable condition” of the cow shelters in Rajasthan and demanded a rescue campaign for sick cows at the government-run cow shelter in Udaipur, where cows have died in large numbers during last few months.

Former union minister Girija Vyas said the Congress will soon form committees to inspect the major cow shelters in Udaipur. “Hundreds of bovines died at Udaipur cow shelter and the toll is increasing every day, but the government and the municipal corporation are still unable to take preventive measures to stop the deaths. It is almost three days the deaths have been exposed by the media reports, but neither the government nor the municipal corporation has formed any inquiry committee to probe into the matter,” Vyas told HT.

“Financial anomaly can be easily seen, as despite having a handsome budget of more than ₹1 crore for the Gau Palan, the government is not spending even ₹2,000 per day on the maintenance of facilities at cow shelter. During my visit to the facility, I found that bovines have been kept in a miserable condition, it (the shelter) was overcrowded and unhygienic, the floor was covered with marsh and the place was so unhygienic and stinking that any individual cannot stand there even for a minute. In such merciless conditions the animals are housed there, which is somewhere pointing towards inefficiency of the government, UMC and the administration, following that it is mayor’s duty to give resignation voluntarily,” she said.

“During our visit, we ourselves discovered some recent cow deaths at the shelter, but the municipal corporation is still denying the fact by saying that many of the dead bovines were dumped there by the contractors after skinning, but what one of the UMC members told us about the number of deaths were in contradiction with the statement,” Vyas added further.

Talking about the new shelter house built in the nearby area, Vyas said, “Fita katne ka shauk rakhne wali sarkar ko chahiye ki naye shelter house ka fita kat de, taki kuchh gaiyon ko wahan shift kiya ja sake aur unhe sahi se rehne ki jagah mil sake (The government that likes to cut ribbons should cut the ribbon of this new cow shelter so that some of the cows could be shifted there in a better environment).”

Vyas also targeted home minister Gulab Chand Katartia over the issue. “UMC is responsible for the cow deaths and Kataria is defending the body and its officials,” she said.

The congress leader said that despite seeking votes in the name of cows, the BJP government is not doing anything to protect them and trying to suppress the issue. “Condition of the cow shelter at Udaipur is very bad and the animals are living in a miserable condition, but the state cow welfare minister did not have time to visit the facility,” said Vyas. “The BJP does politics in the name of cows, but when it comes to their state of affairs, the government doesn’t show any interest,” she added.
