A 30-year-old woman was attacked with acid at a mall in Jaipur’s Jhotwara area on Wednesday, after she turned down a marriage proposal.

The woman, who is married with three children, suffered 15% burns on her face, hands and torso. “The victim, a housekeeper at the mall, was working on the third floor when the accused – an autorickshaw driver – arrived at the scene. The two had an argument, following which he attacked the woman with acid,” said Jaipur police commissioner Sanjay Agrawal.

The accused, 36-year-old Mehboob Khan, also suffered burns in the incident. Both of them are being treated at SMS Hospital in the city.

Jhotwara station house officer Gur Bhupendra Singh said Khan had been bothering the woman with frequent proposals of marriage for the last two-and-a-half years. “He approached her with the same demand on Wednesday, and when she refused, he attacked her with acid,” said Singh.

A colleague of the woman also suffered minor injuries in the attack, and was discharged after administration of first aid.

Both Khan and the woman are residents of the city’s Shastri Nagar locality. “The victim has been married for the last 10 years, and has three kids. The accused married twice, and left his wives on both instances,” said Singh.

Police have registered a case against Khan under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 326A (throwing acid) and 354D (stalking) of the Indian Penal Code. He will be arrested after he is discharged from the hospital.
