A 16-year-old school student was raped by four youths in the Dehorapara area of Kulti in Bengal’s West Burdwan district on Saturday.

While one of the accused is on the run, three have been arrested and charged under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). The accused were produced before Asansol court on Tuesday and remanded in police custody.

The victim stated in her police complaint that four youths secretly shot a video when she was bathing in a pond on Saturday afternoon and threatened to circulate the video. When she broke down, they allegedly took her to a desolate place and raped her.

The girl appeared for the Bengal secondary board exams in March this year. She wanted to kill herself after the incident and wrote everything in a suicide note which her father accidentally discovered and took her to the police.

“The accused, Mitan Bauri, Pradip Bauri and Bikash Bauri are all residents of Dhaorapara area in Kulti. They have been booked under Section 376 D of Indian Penal Code and Section 6 of POSCO Act,” said a Kulti police station officer who is not authorised to talk to the media. “The three were arrested on Monday night on the basis of the complaint lodged on Saturday,” he added.

After she returned home on Saturday, the girl planned to commit suicide and even wrote a note. But her father, who runs a small grocery shop, spotted her trying to hide something. He found the piece of paper and read the note in which the victim narrated her ordeal.

The girl’s father took her to Kulti police station on Saturday night. Police registered her complaint and took her to hospital for medical examination.

The victim alleged before the police that the youths had been following her for days.
