Chaos gripped Jadavpur University on Friday and continued throughout the day, following allegations of malpractice in the conduct of admission of a student under the sports quota.
The chaotic scenes witnessed on the day were the fallout of an allegation by some Trinamool Congress student activists on September 3, that Sanmitra Guha, son of a lecturer, was admitted for an engineering course despite not making it to the final list of 12 students to be admitted under the sports quota.
Though the varsity authorities convened a special executive council meeting to debate and settle the issue on Friday, students, especially those aligned to the Trinamool Chatra Parishad, were not happy with the outcome. The gherao of the varsity authorities was still on till reports last came in.
Quizzed on the outcome of the meeting on the day, Siddhartha Dutta, pro vice-chancellor of the varsity, said, "We have decided to constitute a two-member committee to review the admission procedure under the sports quota. They have been asked to submit their report within ten days."
