Keeping the forthcoming panchayat polls in mind, CPI(M) leaders on Monday called upon the party activists and supporters to get ready for “direct confrontation” with the state government.
Encouraged by the massive turnout of over 1.50 lakh party activists, the key speakers at the rally ridiculed chief minister Mamata Banerjee with the aim to charge up party activists. The most vocal was CPI(M) central committee member Gautam Deb who directly cautioned the state government of “direct confrontation.”
“We are yet to go for a direct confrontation with the state government. But if the attacks on our party workers continue and our student leaders fail to file nominations in college elections, they would resort to agitation programmes like road and rail blockades,” said Deb.
Former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee also asked party workers not to leave an inch in the coming panchayat elections. “These elections would be very critical and we have to fight back in the rural polls. We will not leave an inch to the ruling party. We have asked our workers to reach out to the people at any cost,” said Bhattacharjee.
Criticising the state administration’s apathy to give permission to CPI(M) to hold the rally at the pre- specified places at Metro Channel or in front of CESC House, the former state chief minister said that the huge turnout is a fitting reply to the administrative arrogance.
“The actions and statements of the state government are encouraging anti- social elements. This cannot continue for a long time and people will give a fitting reply to such lawlessness,” Bhattacharjee said.
The leader of opposition in the state Assembly and another party politburo member, Suryakanta Mishra ridiculed the ministers of the state government other than Mamata Banerjee as mere puppets. “Their lips are locked with leucoplasts. We have turn around from this meeting only and I am surely we will do it in the panchayat elections,” he said.
