In a freak accident, a 11-year-old boy choked to death apparently trying to imitate a suicide scene shown in a television programme, police said on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Tanmay Biswas (11), a resident of Majhdia Putikhali village of Krishnaganj in Nadia. He was a Class 6 student of Majhdia Rail Bazar High School in Nadia.
Tanmay’s mother had gone to their relative’s place leaving Tanmay with his homework. His father was also not at home. After finishing his homework, Tanmay switched on the television and started watching his favourite cartoon show, Chhota Bheem.
In a bid to imitate a suicide scene, he took a towel and hung himself from the ceiling of his room.
“When I returned home, I saw my son hanging from the ceiling of his room. The TV was on,” said Tapan Biswas, the victim’s father.
He was immediately rushed to Krishnaganj Primary Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
“He was very interested in cartoon shows, especially Chhota Bheem. But we never thought this habit of his would turn out to be fatal. We are deeply shocked by the incident,” said Amulya Biswas, the victim’s uncle.
“Tanmay was addicted to cartoon shows. We bought this television set 20 days ago. Earlier, he used to go to our neighbour’s house to watch his favourite shows. If only I knew that the set would take my son away from me, I would have never bought this TV,” said Tanmay’s mother Gita Biswas trying hard to hold back her tears.
The police has sent the body for postmortem.
The incident is not an isolated one.
There are many instances of children getting killed while attempting stunts shown in movies or TV.
In 2009, 12-year-old Vishal Hela, died at his home at Shibpur in Howrah when he was trying to copy a stunt on television.
Worried over recurring deaths of children trying to imitate stunts by popular cartoon heroes, the Trinamool Congress in 2003 had demanded a ban on the telecast of such television programmes.
