Mitra’s remarks came a day after suspected Congress-backed goons hurled bombs at a rally attended by her at Chandrapara in Chanchol-II block of Malda on Saturday. Sources said that as soon as the minister began speaking, some miscreants started hurling bombs. As frightened residents started running for their lives, Chowdhury arrived at the scene. Police, too, rushed to the spot and the goons fled.

Speaking to HT on Sunday, Mitra said, “I am responsible for the erosion of Congress’s base. I quit that party to join the Trinamool. So, Congress is trying to kill me.”

Mustak Alam, general secretary of Malda Congress, however, rubbished Mitra’s claim. “The Congress doesn’t believe in the politics of murder,” Alam told.
