Quoting a circular of the state agriculture department, Congress member Ajay Dey charged that rates mentioned for child workers were Rs 61.35 with meal and Rs 58.69 without one.

He expressed surprise as to how "a government department could announce rates for child workers when employment of children was banned under the Child Labour (prohibition and regulation) Act".

The Congress member demanded that state Agriculture Minister Naren Dey should apologise and resign over the issue.

Congress lagislature party leader Manas Bhunia said he wanted to raise a point of order on this issue but was not allowed.

Congress members then staged a walkout from the house.
