According to the police, Amal Halder, a CPI(M) leader of Uttarbhag was murdered during the Left regime. All the accused were identified as Trinamool Congress supporters. After their government came to power, Trinamool supporters started threatening the relatives of Halder.

According to the police, Bapari entered the residence of Halder’s kin and stripped his wife, who later lodged a FIR. “There is a tussle between Trinamool Congress and CPI(M) in the locality. We also cannot rule out the possibility that it may be a cooked up story. However we are probing into the matter,” said a senior officer of South 24-Parganas.
