Union minister Abu Hasem Khan Chowdhury had a narrow escape when Trinamool Congress supporters hurled bombs and opened fire at his convoy on Tuesday.
The attack was the latest episode in the continuing violence over the West Bengal panchayat polls. The minister was campaigning at his home ground Malda district.
GS Mustak Ali, a local leader, said at least 10 bombs were hurled and around 15 rounds of bullets fired. An FIR was lodged but the police denied that any such incident took place.
“There was no attack,” said Anuj Sharma, IGP, law and order. “A loud noise was heard at a distance when the minister was on way to Jadupur village. But it is not clear whether it was a gunshot or a bomb explosion.”
Panchayat elections in Malda are due on July 22. “The area is under a reign of terror. The Trinamool-backed goons have become so desperate they have now attacked a Union minister,” said Adhir Chowdhury, minister of state for railways.
