The reaction from Rizwanur Rehman's family to the Supreme Court direction has been mixed. While they welcome the verdict and pray that it eventually leads to the guilty being punished, Rehman and his wife Zahida Rehman said on Tuesday morning that they had always maintained it was not a case of suicide but murder.

However, that tinge of disappointment vanished when they told HT, "We thank the judiciary for this verdict. The judiciary has fulfilled all our prayers. We wanted proceedings to be initiated against the police officers and that too is on. Now we want the proceedings to eventually lead to appropriate punishment for the guilty."

"This is a very positive step. The order has reinforced out faith in the judiciary to pursue truth to its logical end," said social activist Mudar Pathereya, who took the initiative in organising a candle light vigil in Kolkata in October 2007 on the pavement of Park Street in front of St Xaviers College.
