Where are the CPM antisocials? Kamduni residents ask Mamata
Locals of Kirtipur, where Kamduni falls, say goons have shifted to TMC, which has won 11 out of 12 gram panchayat seats uncontested.kolkata Updated: Jun 18, 2013 08:59 IST
A visibly upset Mamata Banerjee, who had a bitter exchange of words with some women on Monday when she went to review the situation in Barasat in the aftermath of the rape incident last week, has dubbed the rapists as supporters of the CPI(M).But in Kirtipur 2 of North 24-Parganas, where Kamduni village falls, the Trinamool Congress has won 11 seats out of 12 uncontested in the forthcoming gram panchayat elections, which, according to residents, indicates that criminals have changed colour from red to green.
“Those who have been arrested in connection with the incident (rape and murder) are CPI(M) supporters,” Mamata said.
But CPI(M) North 24-Parganas leader Amitabha Nandi retorted, saying, “Our party comrades are homeless because of atrocities of the Trinamool Congress activists. Everybody knows the party colour of the perpetrators who committed the crime. How can she claim that the accused are from the CPI(M)?
However, Nandi has been criticised by Rathin Ghosh, Trinamool MLA from Madhyamgram Assembly constituency and the working president of Trinamool in North 24-Parganas. “In the district, out of 3,570 seats, we filed nominations in 3,499 seats. Had we tortured them, we could have filed nominations from all seats.”
On June 7, a twenty-year-old college girl was raped and murdered in Kamduni village, around 40 km north of Kolkata, unleashing a wave of protests across the state. After the incident, villagers alleged that perpetrators of the crime were once with the CPI(M) and have switched loyalties and joined the Trinamool after the party came to power. “Ansar Ali, the prime accused of the rape and murder, was very close to the local Trinamool Congress leader and also was known as a Trinamool activist. We want to know where have the CPM goons have come from (as alleged by Mamata),” said a local.
There are so many fisheries in the area and earlier, during the Left regime, Majid Mastar, the CPI(M) leader of Sashan, controlled the entire area. But after the Trinamool Congress came to power, all his followers joined the Trinamool. “The economy of Kirtipur depends mainly on fisheries and agriculture. If one has to run a fisheries business, then he has to depend on the ruling party and men like Ansar,” said a homemaker of Kamduni village.
