When looking at gold jewellery, it is important to understand what the Karat actually tells you. Karat refers to the proportion of pure gold in a piece: while gold in its purest form is 24K, 22K has a higher gold content than 18K and 14K, which contain a greater mix of other metals, making them progressively stronger and more durable. Each Karat therefore serves a different purpose, depending on the design and how the jewellery is intended to be worn. Mehul Jain, Founder, EKARAA Jewellery, and Yash Kataria, CEO of Kataria Jewellers, shared how to understand the difference between Karats and make the right decision.

Difference between 14K, 18K, and 22K gold
According to Yash Kataria, 22K gold is more than a purity standard; it's a smart investment. With its high gold content, 22K retains value closely tied to market price, making it ideal for bridal sets, coins, and heirloom pieces that buyers want to pass down or fall back on when gold prices rise. It's also the most liquid form of gold, easiest to resell or exchange without significant value loss, which is why serious buyers still treat it as their first choice, especially in uncertain markets where gold is seen as a haven.
“That said, karat should also match how a piece is worn and its purpose. 18K works well for rings or pendants with gemstone settings, offering more strength and design flexibility than 22K without compromising too much on richness,” said Yash. 14K, being the most durable, suits daily-wear pieces like thin chains, nose pins, or everyday rings that need to withstand regular use with minimal upkeep.

Mehul highlighted that for diamond and gemstone jewellery, we avoid using 22K gold, as it is too soft to hold the stones. We generally recommend 18K or 14K gold because it delivers the ideal balance between an authentic, rich golden luster and the durable strength required for delicate, intricate craftsmanship.
This becomes especially important when working with larger diamonds, polki, sapphires, emeralds or other precious and semi-precious gemstones, where the security of the setting is just as important as the beauty of the piece. For modern buyers seeking pieces to wear with confidence, 18K gold delivers the perfect intersection of durability, setting protection, and higher value.
For traditional or occasion-led jewellery, 18 K can also be a beautiful choice when the richness of gold is an important part of the design.
“On the other hand, if you are looking for everyday or gifting jewellery, 14K and 9K offer a more accessible entry point and work well for pieces that are meant to be worn frequently or gifted effortlessly,” advised Mehul.
Price matters
With gold prices also influencing buying decisions today, it becomes important to be thoughtful about where you allocate your budget across design, gemstone, and metal. For a significant diamond or gemstone piece, we traditionally see customers opting for 18K gold for its balance of strength, design flexibility, and value.
