Lok Sabha election 2019: Kannauj has given 3 CMs to Uttar Pradesh, Delhi
Former Uttar Pradesh chief ministers Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav, and former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit have won Kannauj Lok Sabha seat in different elections.
Perfume city Kannauj has a unique distinction in Indian politics. Three Members of Parliament from Kannuaj Lok Sabha seat have gone on to become chief ministers in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.
Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav and party president Akhilesh Yadav became the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. Congress leader Sheila Dikshit, another former MP from this seat, was the chief minister of Delhi for 15 years between 1998 and 2013.
Mulayam Singh and Sheila Dikshit were elected from Kannuaj Lok Sabha seat once while Akhilesh Yadav won this seat three times. Mulayam Singh had been Uttar Pradesh chief minister twice before he won Kannauj Lok Sabha seat for the first time in 1999. He became the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh third time when he was the Lok Sabha MP from Kannauj.
Sheila Dikshit and Akhilesh Yadav began their political innings from Kannauj. Sheila Dikshit became an MP from Kannauj in 1984. She became a prominent face in Delhi’s politics after losing the next Lok Sabha election from Kannauj seat in 1989.
Akhilesh Yadav won Lok Sabha bypoll from Kannauj seat in 2000 and won this seat for in three consecutive elections.
