A lawyer in Ara on Saturday filed a case against Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, seeking to press sedition charges against them, alleging that the Congress president made people chant “chowkidar chor hai” at a rally in Samastipur on Friday where the RJD leader was also present.

The petition was submitted before the court of chief judicial magistrate, Ara, Shailendra Kumar Sharma.

The complainant, Satyavarat, has sought registration of a case under sections of 124a and 505 (1) (b) of the Indian Penal Code, which pertain to sedition and causing fear and alarm among public whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the state.

The petitioner has named two national channels and Samastipur’s district magistrate as witnesses.

The court fixed the next date for April 29 to hear the matter.

Satyavarat said he was deeply hurt when he watched Rahul Gandhi asking the crowd to chant the slogan.

This is the fourth case filed against the Congress president in Bihar since February, when the build-up for the Lok Sabha poll campaign had started.

Asked for his comment, Congress MLC and AICC media panellist Premchandra Mishra said, “BJP is taking recourse to courts out of desperation as it does not have faith in the people’s court.”
