Lok Sabha elections 2019: It’s Sonia Gandhi vs Congress turncoat in Rae Bareli
United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi sought re-election for the fourth time from Rae Bareli, which was one of the 14 seats of Uttar Pradesh that went to polls on Monday.Updated: May 06, 2019, 23:56 IST
United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi sought re-election for the fourth time from Rae Bareli, which was one of the 14 seats of Uttar Pradesh that went to polls on Monday.
The constituency, which is Congress bastion, saw a turnout of 53.6%. Former prime minister Indira Gandhi represented the seat from 1967 to 1977, and though she won the seat in 1980, she retained Medak seat and resigned from this seat. Arun Nehru, then of the Congress, won the subsequent by-election.
The BJP has won the seat twice, in 1996 and 1998. Sonia Gandhi first fought from this seat in 2004, and has won it ever since. She made her electoral debut in 1999 from Amethi, a seat that she gave up in 2004 to her son, Rahul Gandhi.
The Bharatiya Janata Party fielded former Congressman Dinesh Pratap Singh.
When Congress general secretary (eastern Uttar Pradesh) Priyanka Gandhi Vadra campaigned for her mother Sonia Gandhi in the constituency, she did not forget to mention the BJP candidate’s background and her family’s connect with the people.
“The BJP candidate is the one who used to call her [Sonia Gandhi] sister, fell in her feet and promised not to leave her ever. If a person cannot be loyal to his leader or party how can he or she be loyal to the people. Rae Bareli has been the ‘karm bhoomi’ of Indira (Gandhi) ji and Sonia ji is working here now. So, this is a holy land for us,” she said in one of her public meetings.
There were a few reports of malfunctioning of electronic voting machines from about a dozen places in Rae Bareli.
As a member of Parliament, Sonia Gandhi is credited with setting up a Rail Coach Factory, National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in her constituency.
“This is a one-way election. The BJP is non-existent in Rae Bareli. This time, Sonia Gandhi will win the seat with a higher margin as BJP candidate Dinesh Pratap Singh carries image of a betrayer for leaving the Congress to contest 2019 Lok Sabha election on BJP ticket,” said political analyst UB Singh.
