UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi said on Thursday vote was an important tool that the people could use to teach a lesson to those who made false promises to them in Lok Sabha elections. Sonia named Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making tall promises to the people in 2014 Lok Sabha elections. “You all will go to vote in the next few days. Your vote is very important with which you can teach a lesson to those who made false promises to you… you can also change and make your future with it,” said Sonia while addressing her first poll meeting at Sareni in Rae Bareli.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who has been hopping between Rae Bareli and Amethi leading the Congress campaign in constituencies of her mother Sonia Gandhi and brother Rahul Gandhi, was present with Sonia at the public meeting. Also present at the meeting was Avantika Nehru, daughter of late Arun Nehru.

Sonia said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made tall promises to the people. These promises included giving 15 lakh to all the people, two crore jobs and doubling income of farmers. Many promises were made to working class and announcements were made to bring prosperity. But truth is before you. All of you are facing problems. Young people are looking for jobs and farmers have realized that the promise to double income was only a jumla. Women are finding it difficult to support their families. Demonetisation and the GST have badly affected small traders while the Modi government has provided all the help and government funds to big industries,” said Sonia.

Sonia referred to the issues that Priyanka had already spoken about in her address and said, “you all know what is the situation here. So, you take all the people and your neighbours to ensure victory to Congress and us.” Priyanka in her address had reminded the people of BJP candidate Dinesh Pratap Singh, who had recently switched loyalties from the Congress to the BJP.

“BJP candidate used to be in Congress earlier. He is the one who fell in my feet and told me you are my sister and I will never leave you and the Congress. Now he is contesting election against my mother. If a person is not loyal to his leader, party and ideology, how can he be loyal to the people,” said Priyanka.

She also listed the Sonia’s projects that were stopped by the NDA government. She also talked about the promises made in the Congress’s election manifesto.
