“The Narendra Modi government has failed miserably. They (BJP) can’t find candidates even for three seats in Punjab. They have fielded Sunny Deol in Gurdaspur. The BJP can bring Sunny Deol or Sunny Leone but no one will be able to stand before this aandhi,” Congress candidate from Hoshiarpur Raj Kumar Chabbewal said, according to ANI.

The BJP announced Sunny Deol’s candidature from Gurdaspur, the seat actor Late Vinod Khanna won in 2014, soon after he joined the party on April 23. He filed his nomination papers the next day and has been campaigning since. He is up against Punjab Congress president Sunil Jakhar.

In 1998, when Vinod Khanna, who had no Punjab connection, was made the party candidate and he trounced six-time Congress MP Sukhbans Kaur Bhinder from the segment. He went on to win from the seat four times.

Deol’s father Dharmendra represented the Bikaner Lok Sabha seat from 2004 to 2009. In the current Lok Sabha elections, Dharmendra has made a few appearances to campaign for his wife Hema Malini who is a sitting MP from Mathura. Deol had met BJP president Amit Shah last week.
