Samajwadi Party (SP) national president Akhilesh Yadav on Friday demanded a CBI probe into a corruption allegation against the chief minister’s principal secretary and said graft had now reached the highest office in the state.
“The CM’s office is the biggest office and the CM’s principal secretary is the biggest officer. A CBI probe should be ordered and people must know the truth,” he said to reporters on the sidelines of an event that the Samajwadi Party held at the Janeshwar Mishra Trust office to distribute laptops to some meritorious students.
Akhilesh said action was taken against the whistleblower, but nothing had been done to those about whom the allegations were made. Even the governor had to write to the chief minister about the matter, he said.
Claiming that the “entire government is now neck deep in corruption”, he said even BJP legislators were complaining about it. “The kind of corruption stories circulating now were unheard of before. Corruption is happening from toilet construction to housing to development projects. The government had launched an anti-corruption portal. How many complaints has the government been receiving? What did the government do about those complaints, or did it deliberately shut down the portal?” he asked.
Akhilesh said the government came to power by talking about corruption but could not do anything against it. Rather, corruption had become all the more blatant, he said.
The former chief minister referred to a number of deaths in a Kanpur hospital in last 24 hours over the alleged failure of the air conditioning system and also said this government had brought the medical and health system in the state to a grinding halt.
He alleged people neither got medicines nor ambulances under the present regime, so much so that they had to to hospital on rickshaws, handcarts or shoulders of relatives.
Having passed two budgets, the current government had been in power long enough and could no longer blame the previous regime, he said.
He also said: “The Samajwadi Party (SP) has been distributing laptops to the meritorious students to remind the BJP government that it had promised laptops with free data. And that it should fulfil the promise.”
The former CM said the BJP government also did not keep its promises about developing smart cities, giving farmers a real loan waiver, creating jobs for youths or clearing cane farmers’ dues.
Varanasi is far from becoming Kyoto, he noted.
‘MINISTERS NOT DOING WORK, EYEING BIG BUNGALOWS’
Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also referred to the bungalows that he and other former chief ministers vacated in consonance with a Supreme Court order. He alleged the ministers of the government were not doing any work but were eyeing these big bungalows in order to have these properties allotted to themselves.
