A man and his son were killed in a blast set off using an improvised explosive device (IED) in Milkopur village in Varanasi in the early hours of Wednesday, police said.

A police officer said the heads of the victims, Lalji Yadav (48) and Ajay Yadav (22), were blown to pieces.

He said local residents informed the police that Lalji and Ajay were sleeping in the verandah of their house on the outskirts of the village when unidentified assailants put bombs near their heads and set it off using an IED.

He said that initially the locals did not react to the incident, mistaking it to be a tyre burst.

Villagers informed the police when they came to know about the incident on Wednesday morning.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sureshrao Anand Kulkarni said, “Field unit and crime branch have carried out preliminary investigation which has revealed that IED was used to trigger the blast. It appears that bombs were exploded using detonator and wire.”

Asked about the nature of the explosive, the SSP said experts had been roped in to identify the explosive and how detonator was used to trigger the blast.

Kulkarni said the family of the deceased had informed the police that they had a land dispute with a neighbour.

“We are investigating the matter from this angle as well. A case will be registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination,” he said.

The SSP said teams had been deployed to work out the case.

Meanwhile, villagers staged a road blockade and demanded a compensation of Rs 25 lakh each for the two deceased.

Heavy police force was deployed in the village as a preventive measure.
