A row has erupted between UP Congress and urban development minister Mohd Azam Khan over bungling in Waqf properties in Rampur.

Even as Congress MLA from Swartada (Rampur) Nawab Kazim Ali Khan accused the minister of grabbing of waqf land, Azam Khan refuting the allegations on Sunday said that anti-encroachment drive on waqf properties had been launched not only in Rampur but also all over the state. The minister said not body would be spared in this connection.

Referring to the harassment of a businessman Faisal Khan, the minister said the district administration might have taken action against him because of his involvement in land grabbing in Rampur. The minister said that the businessman had been violating law to promote his trading interest in the city.

Faisal Khan along with Kazim Ali told newsmen here on Saturday that Azam Khan had been harassing him and there was threat to his life.

Expressing concern over development in Rampur, the UP Congress on Sunday assailed Khan for harassing the businessman. The UPCC spokesman Dwijendra Tripathi accused the minister of misusing official machinery against Faisal Khan. Tripathi said the SP government had totally surrendered before the urban development minister, which was dangerous for governance.

Tripathi said Faisal Khan’s statement that he would commit suicide if the government failed to give him protection was a serious matter. He said the government was helpless before the Rampur minister. Demanding probe into the Rampur issue, Tripathi said in the past also Azam Khan had publicly humiliated the officers.

But Azam Khan said that even high and might including MLAs, or Nawabs, who had grabbed waqf land would not be spared. “Legal action will be taken against culprits and they will go to jail also”, Khan said and added the Congress MLA’s charges were baseless. Kazim Ali Khan, scion of Rampur ruling family has been at loggerheads with Azam Khan for a longtime.

Azam Khan said the doors of the court in the country were open and the complainants could move against him. Threatening of dire legal consequences to Kazim Ali, the minister said the Nawabi era had gone and such people should be ready to face music for their illegal activities.
