Parents need to groom and educate their sons to check heinous crime of rape, said charismatic director Anubhav Sinha at the HT Woman Awards function on Sunday.

“I think real solution to this problem is that we need to educate our sons to respect women,” he said.

“On the one hand there is law and order, which has to be taken care of by government, bureaucracy, police and judiciary but despite a strong media only a small fraction of the crime comes into light on the other,” Sinha said adding that “if we want to check the crime we need to treat our kids of both gender as equals.”

“We call women as devi (Goddess) and in the same breath we treat her as weaker sex. We have to change our mindset and believe that women are strong and equal. I appreciate HT’s effort to give a platform to Nirbhya’s mother and a rape survivor,” the helmer of many successful movies said.

“When we read newspapers or see on television about such incidents then it strikes our mind that who are these culprits. One bitter truth is that the culprit is one amongst us. I feel the root of problem lies in the upbringing of a child. I remember our childhood days when our mothers used to serve us before our sisters. Efforts should be made to treat both girls and boys as equals. Parents, specially mothers, need to play an important role in this,” he said.

“I read about Nirbhaya but when her mother was sitting beside me I did not have the courage to talk to her. I am not used to such events but felt good to know about such wonderful women. Brave rape survivor-crusader and winners Pushpa and Sunita (who fought with hyena and leopard) are the real heroes and role models of our society,” Sinha concluded.
