After soaring to 38.3 degree celsius on Sunday, temperature in Lucknow is expected to breach the 40-degree mark. The temperature shot up by 3 degrees in a day. The maximum on Saturday was recorded at 35.7 degrees celsius.
“The coming week would witness further rise in temperatures and the mercury is likely to reach 40 degrees. However, there may be some respite due to cloudy conditions for sometime,” said JP Gupta, state Met director. Sharing the intensity of the hot weather, RK Singh, a resident of South City, said: “A Cigarette lighter was kept on the dash board of my car that remained parked in the sun for 2-3 hours near LDA stadium Aliganj. When I returned, I saw that the lighter had burst due to the heat.”
Hot and dry winds added to the summer woes of residents. “Thankfully, it was a Sunday and we could avoid moving out during the afternoon,” said Chitra Ghosh, a resident of Indira Nagar.
In 2009 and 2010, the maximum temperature in April had touched a high of 44 degrees Celsius. However, last year the highest temperature of the month was recorded at 40 degrees.
“If the mercury soars to 40 degrees in the first fortnight of April, one can well imagine the conditions that are in store in the later part of the month and in May,” said another resident of Gomti Nagar.
The sudden spurt in temperature forced many people to have their air conditioners and coolers serviced on Sunday, shops selling appliances also had a field day with consumers flocking to their establishments.
