The seat was held by the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party's (BSP) Taufiq Ahmed, whose death necessitated the election. His widow Khatun Taufiq is now the BSP nominee.

Some 314,000 people were eligible to vote at 364 polling centres to decide the fate of 11 candidates in the fray.

The state election office said the polling was by and large peaceful though there were complaints about erratic Electronic Voting Machines at some polling stations.

For the first time in the state, the Election Commission made arrangements for live telecast of the polling through webcasting.
