The hike in power tariff in Uttar Pradesh assumed political overtones on Wednesday with the BJP chief Rajnath Singh being approached by the UP Rajya Vidyut Upbhokta Parishad to raise the issue of alleged ‘tariff fixation’ in the state.

After his meeting with the BJP chief on Thursday, head of the power consumers’ body Avadhesh Kumar Verma said Singh gave him a patient hearing and promised to look into the issue. Verma has already inked a pact with Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) to jointly oppose tariff hike in the state.

“I reminded the BJP chief how he had intervened and ensured rollback of the tariff hike that was effected when he was the UP CM. In contrast, despite widespread protests, this government appears least bothered despite a month having been passed since the hike,” he said.

The state Bharatiya Janata Party has already opposed the power tariff hike. Verma plans to meet more political leaders to drum up support on the issue.
