Uttar Pradesh governor BL Joshi on Thursday gave his assent to the much-awaited ordinance that provides for two-year extension of tenure to Lokayukta NK Mehrotra, who had indicted six ministers of the Mayawati government.

Mehrotra’s term has been extended by two years from March 15, 2012 when he was due to retire.

Governor gave his assent to the ordinance after chief minister Akhilesh Yadav went to Raj Bhawan on Thursday morning to convince him about the state government’s point on the issue of extension of term to the lokayukta.

With the governor’s assent, the suspense over Mehrotra’s continuation in office comes to an end. A senior officer said

the ordinance provides for amendment to the UP Lokayukta Act 1975 to extend the six-year term to the lokayukta to eight years.
