Devi Prasad Pandey, 58, the vice principal of Bapu Inter College (Pratapgarh), was killed outside his house in Lalganj area, about 150 km from Lucknow.

"Initially, the assailants attacked Pandey with some sharp-edged weapons and later shot him dead after he raised an alarm," police inspector A.K. Tiwari told reporters in Pratapgarh.

Police are yet to trace the assailants and ascertain the motive behind the crime.

"We have learnt that there were four to five assailants, who managed to escape after committing the crime. Efforts are on to nab them," added Tiwari.
