Nobody likes ending up with yet another boring set of scented candles or worse, a generic gift voucher. And, let’s face it: a bottle of wine no longer does the trick. Gifting can be tough, but with a little thought and creativity, it can really make someone’s Christmas great.

Here are 5 ways to look at buying gifts this season:

The sports fan

We all have that one die-hard sports fan in our family and friends circle. This Xmas, make their day by surprising them with signed memorabilia by their favourite sports personality. You can also go for jerseys of their preferred club/league, merchandise like scarves and even bedsheet and pillow covers. A biography or autobiography by an inspiring athlete is also guaranteed to put a smile on their face. For instance, this year, tennis champ Maria Sharapova launched her memoir, Unstoppable, while Ali: A Life by Jonathan Eig does a neat job of chronicling boxer Muhammad Ali’s life journey.

The book nerd

Think beyond the book store voucher this year. Give the bookworm you love a set of book ends to add to their décor, or a handy reading light so they can stay up late poring over their favourite novel without bothering others. You can also gift them a customised stamp embosser that says, ‘This book belongs to the library of ____’, and they’ll happily mark their collection. If they are a fan of popular writers, get your hands on a pre-signed copy of their novel -- it’ll be a gift an avid reader will always treasure.

The movie buff

We hope you know your movie-crazy relative/friend’s list of favourites because that’s going to come in handy. Gift them large framed posters, collectible DVD sets, and merchandise from various franchises and fandoms like Harry Potter, Dr Who, Star Wars, etc. For fans of superhero series like Superman, Spiderman, Justice League, there are a lot of options to choose from – from adorable figurines and coffee mugs to even Christmas tree balls with their logos on it.

The music maniac

Every music fan is sure to take delight in a turntable – after all, who doesn’t appreciate vintage things that have made a comeback? On that note, you can also go for cassette-themed prints on everything from phone cases to t-shirts. Other options we recommend include Bluetooth speakers so that they can party anytime, anywhere, and a pair of great quality noise cancellation earphones so that they can immerse themselves completely in their beloved songs.

The fashionista

Find out which celebrity they admire and help them replicate their look. There are plenty of Indian websites today that offer outfits handpicked by actors, and clothing worn by actors in certain movies. If you’re unsure of their sense of fashion, give garments and shoes a miss and instead go for things like scarves, handbags, earrings and make-up, which are more versatile.
