The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) disaster management department received a rescue call on Tuesday evening, following which the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Mumbai fire brigade and local police officers rushed to the site - the unused Rambaug mine, located opposite Powai police station.

An official from the NDRF said: “After speaking to some of the locals and finding the girl’s belongings by the side, we believe that the girl may have fallen inside while going to answer nature’s call. We are unable to send divers inside the water-filled quarry as it is very muddy.”

The official added that the teenager’s parents have lodged a missing persons complaint at Powai police station.
