19-year-old dead, brother injured after BEST bus knocks down their bike in Mumbai; driver flees

Boy escapes with minor injuries; police say they have traced the bus driver and will arrest him soon.

A BEST bus driver allegedly knocked down a 19-year-old motorist, killing her on October 28. The accused fled after the incident. Police said they have traced him and will arrest him soon.

The Amboli police said Iram Charnia, a college student, lives in Green Park Building in Oshiwara. She and her younger brother were riding to a hotel around 6.35 pm when the accident occurred. The boy, who was riding pillion, lost consciousness and suffered minor injuries.

Police said Charnia was near Tulja Bhavani Chowk when the bus, approaching from Adarsh Nagar, hit her in front of a coffee shop. The driver sped away.

Passersby gathered at the spot and took Charnia to a private hospital. She was then sent to Cooper Hospital, where she was declared dead on admission.

The girl’s brother and a few passersby noted down the bus registration number and gave it to the police.

The police have registered a case of fatal hit-and-run and rash driving under sections of the Indian Penal Code and sections 134A and 134B of the Motor Vehicles Act.

They said it was unclear how the accident occurred as there are no CCTV cameras in the vicinity that could help them.
