Brace for traffic snarls on Mumbai-Pune Expressway
  • Motorists will have to brace for more traffic snarls on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway until March 2018. Starting today, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will place traffic blocks on the 94-km expressway for a staggered 20 days. This will be done to complete the process of removing loose rocks to avoid landslides on the road during the monsoon.
  • The loose rocks will be removed near Adoshi, Bhatan, Khandala and Amrutanjan tunnels. The blocks will be between 10am and 3.15pm for 15 minutes at a time on both sides of the lane. The exercise will begin from February 6 to March 14, a press release issued by MSRDC states.
  • An MSRDC official said, “We have to block traffic during the process as a safety measure. The rocks should not fall on any vehicle during the process.”
  • Last week, MSRDC has carried out similar traffic blocks near the Adoshi tunnel.

According to the police, the group of vendors, who had come to Panvel to buy vegetables, were on their way home. “The vendors came from villages namely Sangadi, Borouli, Bhilouli among others. They usually buy vegetables at wholesale prices,” said a police officer from Panvel city police station.

All of them suffered injuries and were rushed to a government hospital in the vicinity. “Two of them, Gotiram Patil, 65, and Sangu Pawar, 66, suffered severe injuries to their heads. They succumbed later. Their bodies were handed over to their families after post-mortem,” he said.

Three others -- Shakuntala Patil, 55, Arun Patil, 45, and Madhukar Patil, 48 – who suffered injuries are residents of Borouli and Bhilouli villages.

“The tempo driver fled after the accident. We have registered a case against him,” another police officer said. “The exact cause of the accident is not known as the driver is yet to be arrested. The driver may have lost control on the tempo, ramming it into the trailer.”

An 18-year-old biker from Kharghar died, as he came under a truck after being hit by it on the Sion-Panvel highway near Nerul on Monday. He was wearing a helmet, the police said.

According to the police, the incident took place around 12.30pm, when Ajay Patil was crossing Nerul. “The truck, which was moving in the same direction, hit him. Patil fell down and came under the truck. His helmet was also cracked. He suffered severe injuries to his head,” said P Sonkamble, police sub-inspector from Nerul police station.
