The Sakinaka police said the accused, Suresh Waghmare, is unemployed and lives in Kasarvadavli, Thane. One phone and two SIM cards have been seized from him.

The accused first got in touch with the 24-year-old complainant, who works as a medical compounder at a clinic in Andheri, in January, the police said. “They were friends on Facebook, but had never met. He called and told her that he was in love with her, to which she responded by telling him not to call her again and cut his call,” a police official said, requesting anonymity.

He kept calling her and she continued to cut his calls till finally she got herself a new mobile number. However, the accused then started calling her on the clinic’s landline number. Soon after, he also got hold of her new mobile number and sent her some obscene WhatsApp messages on it.

When the woman kept cutting his calls, he started using up to six different mobile numbers to call her as well as to send obscene messages on WhatsApp. When the complainant continued to ignore him, he sent her some pornographic images. “The woman asked him to stop harassing her and blocked one of his numbers, but he sent her pornographic images again on May 12,” the official said.

The complainant then approached the Sakinaka police, who registerd a First Information Report after which the local crime branch unit traced and arrested him on Wednesday. He has confessed to the crime, the police said.

The accused has been booked under sections 354 (D) (stalking), 509 (insulting modesty) and 67A (publishing or transmitting sexually explicit material) of the Indian Penal Code, and under the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013.

He has been remanded in police custody.
