The University of Mumbai (MU) has goofed up again. Civil engineering students appearing for their third-semester exam were given a question paper that was a replica of the paper from the exam held in December 2017. Eighteen of the 20 questions in the 100-mark Strength of Materials (SOM) subject paper were the same. HT has copies of both the question papers.
An estimated 500 to 1,000 students appeared for the exam on May 22.
Teachers expressed surprise over the similarity in the two papers. “Usually around 10%-20% questions in the SOM paper are from previous years’ question papers. But for the first time, so many questions have been repeated. Even the numeric values in questions are the same,” said a teacher from a Thane college.
Vaibhav Naravade, president, Mumbai University and College Teachers’ Association (MUCTA), said he has informed the varsity registrar and the vice-chancellor about the goof-up. “Action should be taken, as this has happened too many times. It is an act of sheer laziness and all the officials involved should be questioned,” he said.
The question paper is set by a panel consisting of teachers from different colleges. They draft three papers of which one is picked for the exam. There is no specific criterion for selecting the paper. “It is strange how the paper that got selected was an exact copy of the previous paper,” Naravade said.
In 2017, the entire Building Design and Drawing II (BDD II) fifth-semester paper was a copy of the previous examination held in May. In February 2016, a question paper in the Master of Computer Application (MCA) first-semester exam was copied from the internal examination of a city college.
Suresh Ukarande, chairperson, MU’s board of studies in civil engineering, said, “We will have to verify the claim [that the two papers are similar].”
