Mumbaiites heading to Matheran for a monsoon picnic at the end of this month will get to ride a toy train from the gates of the hill station to the Matheran town.
The much awaited toy train service between Neral and Matheran will partially begin between Aman Lodge and Matheran at the end of July. The third engine is currently undergoing final touches at Parel workshop and will be ready by next week.
Ravinder Goyal, divisional railway manager, Central Railway, said, “The final leg of work is going on and the services between Aman Lodge station and Matheran will begin this month.”
The CR authorities were attempting to start the toy train services by June but a failed locomotive restricted the move. Two locomotives were required to start the shuttle service. The failed locomotive had returned to the Parel workshop and is going through the necessary changes which will soon be done for the service to start at the end of this month. Neral-Matheran stretch is kept shut during the monsoon.
The toy train service had hit a major road block and were completely stopped last year after a series of derailments near Aman Lodge station. It became inconvenient for not just tourists but also residents of Neral working in Matheran. The residents had requested Central Railway authorities to commence the Neral- Matheran toy train services.
