Mumbai NCP MP’s ‘selfie with pothole’ goes viral, spurs Twitter hashtag
With social media users across Maharashtra following suit, the online campaign has popularised the hashtag #selfiewithpotholesmumbai Updated: Nov 04, 2017 00:42 IST
By posting a selfie set against the backdrop of potholes on the Katraj-Undri bypass and Bopdev Ghat roads on Tuesday, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Supriya Sule unwittingly or wittingly launched a social media campaign against the Devendra Fadnavis-led state government.
Sule posted the picture on her Twitter handle in response to the public works department’s (PWD) promise to eliminate potholes across the state.
“Since the condition of roads has deteriorated owing to the monsoons, the PWD has begun to repair them. By November 15, not a single pothole will be seen on any of the roads,” said PWD minister Chadrakant Patil.
Sule said she plans to continue her protest till this deadline.
She was joined by other NCP leaders, including state party president Sunil Tatkare, leader of the Opposition in Maharashtra’s legislative council Dhananjay Munde, and NCP women’s wing president Chitra Wagh.
With social media users across the state following suit, the online campaign has popularised the hashtag #selfiewithpotholes.
This is the latest instance of the NCP upping its social media presence while taking on the Fadnavis-led government.
Sule has been vocal in her criticism of the Fadnavis-led government, having called him “short tempered” in September last year.
Sources from within the party have hinted that the NCP is gearing up to make Sule the face of the party in the near future.
