The Sion-Panvel highway, which is riddled with potholes, saw long traffic snarls on Saturday as hundreds of Mumbaiites headed out of the city owing to the weekend.
Worsening the scenario, the PWD officials are also repairing the roads and filling up the potholes at different places. Areas like Kharghar, Belapur, Kalamboli have seen heavy congestions.
“The traffic movement is extremely slow as motorists tend to slow down when they see a pothole in front of their vehicles. The number of vehicles playing on the road is also noticeably high. The situation is critical but not out of control,” said Pravin Pandey, police inspector of Kharghar traffic unit.
“The scenario is worse on the lane towards Panvel as a lot of people are going out from Mumbai to enjoy the weekend. Most of these people normally go to their native places in Raigad and Ratnagiri district. Many others also travel to places like Alibaug, Lonavala, Karjat, Matheran among others to spend time with their family and friends,” he said.
The lane towards Mumbai, on the other hand, has seen normal traffic flow since morning. “That lane sees traffic congestions in the second half of Sundays and first half of Mondays when the people return to the city,” Pandey further said.
To monitor the vehicles on the road, the traffic officials had to deploy extra manpower. The heavy rains also affected the traffic management system.
After Navi Mumbai police commissioner Hemant Nagrale requested them to take the requisite measures, the PWD started repairing the road a few days ago.
“On Saturday, our people repaired the road on Kopri bridge near Kharghar and at some other places in the same area. It will take us a few more weeks to repair the entire road,” said a PWD official.
