Train commuters travelling between Kasara, Asangaon, Titwala and Kalyan will have to rely on road transport on Thursday as the Central Railway (CR) has announced a five-hour-long mega block from 10am to 3pm.
The CR has called for the block to carry out the work of laying two girders for a new foot overbridge (FOB) at the Kasara-end of the Ambivli railway station.
“As per the requirement of the army officials, we have decided to impose a mega block on Thursday. Additional trains will run between Kalyan and Kurla-CST and the respective road transport authorities have been asked to ply additional buses to Kasara- Asangaon and Titwala railway stations,” said a railway officer, requesting anonymity.
The new foot overbridge was initiated by the railway after the Elphinstone Road railway station stampede that killed 23 in September 2017. The work is being carried out by the army since November 20, 2017.
The announcement has irked passengers’ association members.
“The mega block is imposed on a working day and local train service, which is the only mode of transport for around six to seven lakh commuters from Kasara, Asangaon and Titwala, will not be available for five hours. The railways should have kept the block on a non-working day,” said Shyam Ubale, secretary for Kalyan- Kasara- Karjat railway passengers’ association.
He added, “We have appealed to the railway officials, the Kalyan-Dombivli civic chief and the state transport body to allot additional buses from these places.”
The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Transport (KDMT) has arranged for 10 bus services between Kalyan and Ambivli- Titwala railway stations between 10am and 3pm. “In case the need arises, we will send more buses,” said a KDMT official. According to the railway, a team of 39 army officials are deployed at the Ambivli railway station to carry out the work for the new foot overbridge.
