Outstation terminal of Mumbai’s CSMT to get airport lounge look

A new waiting hall for outstation passengers is also part of the plan

In a move to develop the outstation terminal at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), the Central Railway (CR) has started modification work on the lines of an airport lounge. The lane leading to platforms number 14 and 15 will get a fresh new look once being modified.

Concealed lighting, marble flooring, tiled pathways, and granite ceilings have been included in the modification of the outstation terminal entrance on P’D Mello Road. “The modification of the area is being undertaken to give passengers a similar experience to that at an airport lounge. The modification was pending and we are undertaking the changes after a detailed study,” said a senior CR official.

The parcel office has been moved towards the pit line of the terminus and the linen room will be relocated in the same area. A new waiting hall for outstation passengers is also part of the plan.

“The passage has been beautified with modern facilities and improved illumination. This will provide a new experience to passengers,” said AK Jain, senior public relations officer, Central Railway.

The zonal railway is also planning to give the lane a heritage look and will place images of heritage steam locomotives, the first local train and photos of railways in the hills. “There is a steam locomotive and coach model that is made out of recyclable cardboard currently placed in the lane. That will be removed and heritage pictures of the Indian Railway will be displayed there,” added the official.

CR is already working on the restoration of the UNESCO certified heritage building at CSMT. The ₹41-crore project is aimed to restore the building back its former glory.
